Please join us in acknowledging and celebrating the life of our founder and guiding light, Robert (Bob) S. Hurlbut Jr. (1937-2025).

In 1993, Bob Hurlbut intended to retire when he stepped down as the 24-year Headmaster of the Park School in Brookline, MA. Instead, he launched Cambridge Senior Volunteer Clearinghouse (CSVC) with education researcher Bev Cassara and, in 1994, he became Cambridge Community Foundation’s first Executive Director. CSVC connected Cambridge’s underutilized pool of retiree talent with long-term volunteer roles. Eventually, CSVC became the organization you know today as Cambridge Volunteers.

Bob profoundly shaped Cambridge Volunteers' programs and values, in particular our insistence on providing a human touch in all that we do. He remained an active board member and our guiding light until his final months. We look to Bob’s life choices as a reminder to live ours as active members of a community, and to be kind, authentic, and respectful in all of our relationships. He was a gentleman in all ways.

We love you, Bob.
