Volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate

Boston Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)

Description

Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers work to promote and advocate for the best interests of children involved in cases of abuse and/or neglect within the Suffolk and Middlesex County Juvenile Court.

You need to be at least 21 years old and able to commit to supporting a youth through the length of their case, on average 18-22 months. Most volunteers work about 10-15 hours a month. Boston CASA host three training sessions a year, Fall, Spring and Summer. The training is over 35 hours and is both in person and virtual.

Boston CASA volunteers:

  • Advocate for the child’s best interest in court

  • Collaborate with everyone in the child’s life to help ensure their physical, emotional, mental health, and educational needs are met

  • Provide a consistent and stable adult presence in the child’s life

  • Work on a single case–one child or sibling group–at a time, and stay with that case until it is closed

  • The goal for every case is permanency—for each child to find a safe and permanent home, and for teens aging out of the foster care system to transition successfully into independent adulthood.
