Description
If you have even the most basic sewing or embroidery skills, and a desire to build community, Cambridge Wildlife Arts invites you to become a sewing circle hosts for their Banners Project.
The Banners Project aims to build community, teach basic sewing skills, and enable people to make art together amidst destruction. The banners themselves proclaim our resilience and care for each other, for other species, and the land, in a time of social and economic upheaval and climate crisis. Each banner has an appliquéd wildlife-themed illustration as well as a brief message of resiliance, defiance, or community care. All banners will be paraded in the Honk! parade on 10/12 and thereafter available through a lending library.
The role includes:
Bringing a small box of materials and supplies to a pre-arranged venue.
Greeting participants, who may be pre-registered or simply members of the public who have not pre-registered (depending on event) and welcoming them to join with a basic introduction (the who-what-why-and-where-and-how of the project).
Ensuring that beginning or non-sewers are taught to sew a straight stitch by you or another participant with this skill.
Offering portions/segments of the banner to each sewer, with attention to their skill level, and answering questions about how to proceed with the sewing.
Maintaining a welcoming, informal, and inclusive environment.
Making sure participants are invited to include their name (full, abbreviated or just initials) on the Banner-Makers log and to join our mailing list, and that they know about upcoming sewing circles.
Opportunities include being a host at one (or more) of Cambridge Wildlife Arts' sewing circles at a local library or park at pre-scheduled times that currently include:
Sat., October 11, 2025, 1:00–5:00 p.m., at ArtsHonk! on Elm Street. in Davis Square, Somerville
