Health Advocates & Connect Advocates

Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES)

Description

Are you kind, a good listener, dependable, and do you like to help older adults in the community? SCES is seeking volunteers like you!

Health Advocates and Connect Advocates are matched 1-to-1 with older adults to help navigate medical appointments. Appointments are during the work/school day and average 3+ hours (including transportation to and from). Volunteers can expect 1 to 4 appointments per month, with matches being made based on volunteer availability, and SCES looks for candidates who can commit to at least a year with the program.

Health Advocate volunteers accompany their match to appointments, familiarize themselves with their medical issues, and provide support and prompts for conversations with care providers. They also keep track of their match's medications and reinforce understand of any changes following each appointment.

Connect Advocate volunteers help an older adult with a behavioral health condition access medical care and cope with health-related stress and anxiety. Volunteers provide emotional and practical support.
