Elementary Math and Literacy Volunteers

Cambridge School Volunteers

Description

CSV offers a variety of opportunities for math and literacy volunteers at the elementary level:

Elementary classroom volunteers are placed in classrooms to assist with individualized and small-group instruction within all curricular areas. The role of a classroom volunteer includes working with students at all levels, helping students stay on task, or facilitating discussions. Classroom volunteers can assist with various academic support needs, make presentations on specialized topics, and more. Many classroom volunteers become integral to the classroom community, returning year after year.

Elementary math volunteers help students discover or rediscover the joy of mathematics. We go beyond traditional computation to explore patterns and puzzles using manipulatives, discover multiple paths to “answers” by sharing and conversing with peers, and help children and adults (including ourselves) develop positive math identities—that is, to know ourselves as one who can make sense of patterns, who can “do” and enjoy math.

An ideal elementary math candidate will not necessarily be someone who has excelled at in-school math or on math tests. Rather, an ideal candidate will be flexible about the unique ways we each may make sense of a math problem, will negotiate setbacks and frustrations with patience, perseverance, and a willingness to try new ideas or strategies. Some of our finest candidates grew up with negative math identities and are developing more positive math identities through their work as math volunteers.

Volunteers working with elementary literacy may work one-to-one or with small groups of children to improve reading and writing skills during Reader’s or Writer’s Workshop in the classroom. During Writer’s Workshop, volunteers assist the teacher in reinforcing effective writing strategies and specific skills. Training is provided on topics relevant to early literacy support.

CSV manages over a dozen programs for students in every Cambridge public school at every grade level. Please complete CSV's online volunteer application so that staff can answer your questions regarding where they may have openings for volunteers. An orientation, individual placement meeting, and a CORI check are required.
