Description
Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services' Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) takes place on the 1st Tuesday of each month, providing low-income adults aged 60 and over with (mainly shelf stable) groceries. SCES partners with the Greater Boston Food Bank, which delivers packed groceries to the SCES office at 61 Medford St. in Somerville. The grocery boxes typically contain canned goods, rice, beans, and shelf stable milk, and they weigh about 28 pounds each!
The two basic volunteer roles are logistics and delivery. Logistics volunteers help on site: shifting boxes, checking in, packing produce, loading vehicles, and cleaning up. Volunteers deliver the groceries to diffrent apartments at one multi-family building. Teams of two volunteers are welcome so that your car may have a "driver" and a "runner." Each driver will need a personal vehicle, and a cell phone number to be reached en route if needed. (Monthly)
Notes:
Those who drive regularly as part of their volunteer role are asked to provide a driving record available from the RMV for $8. Volunteers with an out of state license are asked to request and forward their own driving record from the state licensure.
Logistics volunteers are asked to arrive at 8 am. Delivery volunteers arrive between 8:30 and 9:30 am.
