Organizational Overview
Tutoring Plus is a local nonprofit that provides free tutoring, mentoring and enrichment programs to students in grades 4-12 in Cambridge, MA. Our mission is to advance educational equity by supporting youth in their academic, personal, and socio-emotional growth through free, individualized tutoring by volunteers within our community. Our vision is a world where every young person is empowered with the knowledge and confidence to create their future. We believe that all young people deserve great opportunities to learn and grow.
Founded in 1964 by a group of neighborhood mothers, we are one of the longest-running after school academic programs for Cambridge students. Currently, we offer free 1:1 tutoring and mentoring for elementary, middle, and high school students subject-specific enrichment programs, (engineering, coding, math), and gender-specific programs for middle school students. Programs focus on increasing academic abilities, social-emotional skills, and self-confidence.
Organizational Structure
Our budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026 is ~$300,000 with the majority (~50%) coming from foundations and grants. The remainder comes from a mix of individual donations, an annual fundraising event, corporate and university support, and contract income. We currently employ two full time staff, several part time staff, and work study students.
In addition to staff, we recruit, train, and manage over 100 volunteers throughout the academic year. Our 1:1 volunteer-to-student model is unique to Tutoring Plus.
