Art & Science in One Volunteer Mentor

Cambridge School Volunteers

Description

This program runs in the Spring only.

Cambridge School Volunteers’ outdoor STEAM program, Art & Science in One, currently serves fourth- and fifth-grade students at Tobin Montessori School, a Cambridge Public School. CSV trains mentors in techniques of nature journaling with children and matches them with a student. The program consists of ten one-hour or ninety-minute sessions in a structured program in which the entire class participates in field study under the supervision of CSV staff, an embedded drawing instructor, and the CPS classroom teacher. Together, the mentor and student develop and extend their observation skills, make discoveries in private and public open spaces in Cambridge, practice drawing and recording information, and learn about nature journaling from a science illustrator.

Volunteers do not need to possess particular drawing skills or artistic ability. CSV provides orientation and training, and volunteers are invited to attend an additional best practices training once per semester.

CSV manages over a dozen programs for students in every Cambridge public school at every grade level. Please complete CSV's online volunteer application so that their staff can answer your questions regarding where they may have openings for volunteers. An orientation, individual placement meeting, and a CORI check are required.
