Universal Access Recreation Programs (MA)

About

The DCR Universal Access Program ensures equal access to outdoor recreation in Massachusetts state parks through site improvements, specialized recreation equipment, and year-round adaptive recreation programs. Year-round activities include hiking, paddling, rowing, sailing, cycling, golf, skiing, skating, and more. Adaptive programs offer specialized equipment and support from professional staff and volunteers. Volunteers may be referred to sign up with individual providers hosting the events.


Volunteer activities have included:

  • Acting as a sighted guide

  • Operating tandem equipment like bikes and kayaks

  • Offering companionship and support on bike rides

  • Pushing a hiking wheelchair or ice sled

  • Event support at the Annual Adaptive Recreation Fair

  • Outreach efforts

  • Graphic design

  • Photography

  • Equipment maintenance

  • Accessible trail mapping
