About
Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site preserves a Georgian house and grounds whose occupants shaped this nation. It was a site of colonial enslavement and community activism, George Washington’s first long-term headquarters of the American Revolution, and the place where Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote his canon of 19th-century American literature.
Longfellow House aims to carry on the site's legacy as a vibrant public gathering place for literature and the arts. They run Guided Tours of the historic house and regular community events throughout the year. The house sits on two acres of historic grounds, including a shaded lawn and Formal Garden, whi are open from dawn to dusk; all are welcome to enjoy them free of charge. The Visitor Center is open (Memorial Day to Halloween; Fri- Mon 9:30-5:00) to borrow games, art supplies, and books for toddlers through adults.
Volunteers at Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site are part of the National Park Service Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP) Program. Volunteers assist staff with maintenance of the Colonial Revival Garden and surrounding grounds, set-up and take-down of community events, and digital transcriptions of archival documents.
Longfellow House is grateful for the incredible care of their volunteers and excited to continue to see the volunteer program grow.
