The next major opportunity to volunteer with the Somerville Community Growing Center is at the Gathering of the Fairies on Sept. 19, 2026!

Details on the event: This is a long-time favorite event at the Growing Center, and their biggest children's event of the year! Celebratory activities in the garden for fairies and their friends include storytelling, building a fairy house, creating a fairy wand and other arts & crafts. Donations are encouraged to support the Growing Center and Gathering of Fairies.

Gathering of the Fairies

Saturday, Sept. 19 (weather date: Saturday, Sept. 26)

2:00-5:00 pm

Somerville Community Growing Center, 22 Vinal Avenue

Volunteer Tasks Include:

• Bakers for Bake Sale: Bake something to be sold (indiv. items like bars, cookies, etc.) and bring it to the Growing Center prior to 1:00 pm

• Photographers: Take event photos, making sure to get permission from caregivers first.

• Event Set-up 12-2 pm: Help to set-up tables, chairs, signs, art supplies, tents, etc.

• Bake Sale Servers/Helpers/Breakdown 1:30-3:30 & 3:30-5:30: Help with set up (if applicable), make presentable. Monitor sales - prices will be "Pay What You Want" with options for Venmo, cash and website. Help with clean-up (if applicable).

• Face Painters 2-3:30 & 3:30-5: Get creative and help us make this a magical event for all! Face paints and pictures provided. Chairs provided with arms, table provided, tent provided for shade.

• Wand Making Helpers 2-3:30 & 3:30-5: Assist children as needed with making wands from sticks, string, and nature materials.

• Fairy House Building Helpers 2-3:30 & 3:30-5: Help children with making fairy houses from our limited collection of found nature materials.

• Arts & Crafts Helpers 2-3:30 & 3:30-5: Assist with craft projects.

• Story Readers 4:30-5: Read fairy books to children. Books and blanket to be provided. Bring your own cushion or use chair provided.

• Clean-up 5-6 pm: Break down event, clean up any nature or art materials left on the grass.
