Description

Somerville Housing Authority (SHA) partners with Food For Free to provide ongoing, recurring food distributions to residents of public housing communities serving seniors and persons with disabilities. One consistent volunteer is needed at each site to support regularly scheduled distributions.


· Up to 30 food boxes per distribution

· Each box weighs approximately 35 pounds

· No cost and no tenant commitment required

· Volunteer-based program

· Residents are notified by robocall upon food arrival

· Distribution is first come, first served

 

Locations and Ongoing Schedules

CAPEN COURT

  • 1 Capen Court, Somerville, MA

  • First and third Thursday of each month

  • Delivery window is 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Distribution may run from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM

 

BRADY TOWERS

  • 252 Medford Street, Somerville, MA

  • First and third Wednesday of each month

  • Delivery window is 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Distribution may run from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM

 

PROPERZI MANOR

  • 13 to 25 Warren Avenue, Somerville, MA

  • Second and fourth Wednesday of each month

  • Delivery window is 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Distribution may run from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM

 

CIAMPA MANOR

  • 27 College Avenue, Somerville, MA

  • Second and fourth Wednesday of each month

  • Delivery window is 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Role Summary
The Volunteer Food Distribution Coordinator is a consistent, site-based volunteer who supports recurring food distributions by assisting with setup, resident support, and coordination with Somerville Housing Authority and Food For Free staff. This role requires reliable, ongoing participation at one assigned site.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with site setup, including sorting, moving, and unpacking food items upon arrival

  • Support distribution of up to 30 food boxes per event

  • Coordinate with SHA staff regarding indoor delivery and tenant robocalls

  • Welcome and assist residents during food pickup

  • Manage flow and organization during distribution

  • Answer questions and refer residents to Food For Free or SHA staff

  • Assist residents who need help carrying food

  • Support additional tasks as needed

Volunteer Preferences

  • Friendly, patient, and respectful demeanor

  • Calm and dependable in a busy environment

  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently

  • Able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds

  • Bilingual in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Portuguese preferred
