Medical Advocate volunteers provide compassionate in-person support to survivors and their families in hospital emergency departments 24 hours a day during sexual assault exams and evidence collection kits.
Volunteers must be able to commit to at least one weekly 5-8 hour shift, with flexibility around those hours, and carry a cell phone to be notified to go to the hospital during that shift should they be called. Although a valid driver's license and car access are not required, volunteers must be able to arrive at a designated Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner hospital in BARCC's service area within 45 minutes of being notified.
A 40-hour training and buddy shift are required before starting. Volunteers are also required to attend twice-monthly peer supervision meetings, held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 6:30 to 8:00pm.
BARCC is looking for volunteers of all genders. Spanish-English bilingual applicants are especially welcome. Please contact volunteer@barcc.org or (617) 649-1273 to learn more.
