Medical Escorts/Patient Advocates
Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES)
Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES)
Medical Escort volunteers help older adults to get the medical attention they need by either driving or accompanying them (in a taxi or transportation such as The Ride) to and/or from their appointments.
This role requires availability during weekday business hours. Receive emails about escort requests and volunteer as your schedule permits; trips may take from 2 to 4 hours to complete.
Patient Advocate volunteers are matched with an older adult who needs more in-depth assistance managing their medical care. They become familiar with the person's medical history and accompany them to medical appointments to ensure that they understand their doctors' diagnoses, prescriptions, and instructions. Advocates also help to communicate any concerns the person may have so that such issues can be addressed by their healthcare providers.
Training is provided. For more information, please call (617) 628-2601, ext. 3214, or email Lindsey Smilack at vol@eldercare.org.
