About

The Harvard Square Homeless Shelter (HSHS) serves the homeless community of Cambridge and Boston. The student staff work with support from the University Lutheran Church to provide guests with shelter, food, security, and a supportive environment of mutual respect.

In addition to providing these fundamental needs, HSHS works individually with those who seek assistance as they strive to attain their own goals and make the transition into stable housing. The shelter also serves as a bridge between students and people experiencing homelessness in Cambridge and Boston.

HSHS generally accepts the majority of volunteers for weekly shifts in September-October of each year, though there is a substitute volunteer list for individuals who are unable to make weekly commitments. Volunteer recruitment typically happens three times a year in September, January, and June.

Volunteer activities have included:

  • Cooking/serving meals

  • Collecting donated food from nearby retailers

  • Cleaning the space
