Longfellow House National Historic Site

The Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site celebrates the arts, scholarship, stewardship, and community. It was George Washington’s headquarters during the Siege of Boston and later the home of poet Henry W. Longfellow. Join in exploring stories of slavery, freedom, military and social history, literature, design, and conservation. In addition to appreciating its rich history, visitors to the site can explore the gardens, participate in educational programs, and attend special events.


Volunteer activities have included:

  • Working in the Visitor’s Center

  • Maintaining the gardens

  • Supporting special events

  • Working in the archives

  • Transcribing digitized historical documents
